Brian brings his knowledge of finance and real estate law to structure and close transactions that promote the growth of communities and help clients meet their business objectives.
Overview
Brian leads the firm’s Tax Credit & Impact Finance practice group, which provides a full range of legal services to clients engaging in transactions involving tax credits, government incentive programs and other finance initiatives. Brian counsels lenders, investors, community development entities and sponsors in navigating the legal complexities that come with transactions financed with incentives and impact-driven finance partners.
Committed to understanding the business and impact objectives of his clients, Brian engages in creative, practical and efficient problem solving to structure and close each transaction. He has substantial experience helping clients navigate transactions that generate state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits, state and federal new markets tax credits (NMTC), community development lending, preferred equity, structured finance and clean energy lending initiatives. He also represents clients in a wide range of other finance and real estate transactions. For projects large and small, Brian works closely with each client’s management teams, finance and tax departments, and internal legal counsel to identify and implement best practices and creative legal solutions.
Experience
Brian is well known for representing the industry’s most sophisticated investors and syndicators in tax credit transactions, and he has also built a reputation as an effective counselor to developers and non-profit borrowers. In addition to representing investors and syndicators in projects across the country, Brian has helped close transformative projects in the St. Louis area that has included rehabilitation of an abandoned and blighted school building into a unique commercial office space, expansion and renovation of a non-profit’s headquarters to dramatically expand its community impact and rehabilitation of a 235,000 square foot building into 164 loft-style apartment units.
Prior to law school, Brian worked in Washington, D.C. and held several political internships including for a U.S. Representative and at the White House.
